There have been some pretty horrific things going on in the world recently. Most notably, the earthquake in central China and the cyclone in Burma.
The responses to these events by the governments of each respective country have been worryingly slow. Not quite as bad in China as in Burma but still not fast enough, in my humble opinion. If, on a much small scale, there was a house on my road that was on fire and I knew that if I acted quickly enough I could save the people insider then I'd be straight over there before my brain could even engage with this thought.
If massive loss of human life isn't impetus enough for these people to pull their fingers out and get their (so-called emergency) plans into action. What is?
That is a worrying thought.
The preservation of human life transcends politics in the vast majority of (democratic) countries around the world. But the Burmese government, with its vastly over-stretched resources, is so unwilling to accept an army of foreign aid that is ready and waiting to help clear the mess up and save peoples lives - all for the purposes of saving face for its corrupt regime. I'm not blowing the trumpet for democracy here as it too certainly has its flaws but if your system of government and those who run are more important than saving human lives then surely there is no stronger reason for reform.
I knew I didn't take that Politics degree for nothing.
On more important matters, I'm hungry and require a sandwich.
